Industrial Technologies and Design

Mike Harald Head of Faculty – Industrial Technologies and Design

The Emmaus College Industrial Technologies and Design department provides opportunities for students whose talents lie in practical areas.

Our subject area combines the knowledge, practical skills and attitudes consistent with technical and industrial careers in our community of woodworking, metalworking and graphical communication through a wide range of subject choices. All Industrial Technology and Design subjects have an industrial focus e.g. product design, product manufacture, graphical, communication, safety, and social/environmental impacts of technology developments.  Students are involved in technology challenges that develop their design, problem solving, decision making, task management, creative and practical skills.

The subjects that the Industrial Technology and Design department offer include Year 7 (compulsory elective) and Year 8 (elective) Industrial Technology and Design to give an introduction to Industrial Technology & Design through the application of the design process in the Materials & Technologies context. Students are given a taste of three areas of Woodworking, Metalworking and Graphical communication.

In Year 9 and 10 we offer electives which provide an opportunity to further extend and specialize in a range of technology areas. These electives include: Woodworking, Metalworking, Industrial Graphics Skills and Design.

In our Senior subject offerings, students have the opportunity to further develop their design skills through a general subject offered in Design and manufacturing skills through applied subjects of Furnishing Skills, Engineering Skills and Industrial Graphics Skills.

These courses allow students to express their manual skills by creating products with practical applications. Students are also given the opportunity to showcase their work at Emmaus’ annual Turning on the Talent exhibition.
